What Information Is Needed for an Accurate Custom Metal Parts Quote

A complete RFQ helps a manufacturer select the right process and prepare a reliable quotation. For custom stamped, sheet metal or CNC machined parts, the following information is usually enough for an initial review.

Drawing and Revision

Provide a 2D drawing with dimensions, tolerances, holes, threads and bend details. A STEP model is also useful for complex parts, but critical requirements should still appear on the 2D drawing. Include the part number and current revision so the correct files are reviewed.

Material and Thickness

State the exact material grade, such as stainless steel 304 or 316L, aluminum 6061 or a required equivalent. For sheet parts, include the thickness. Mention any material certificate or third-party testing requirement before quotation because it may affect sourcing, minimum quantity and lead time.

Quantity and Production Plan

Provide the prototype quantity, first production quantity and estimated annual demand when available. Quantity affects whether laser cutting, CNC machining, simple tooling or production stamping is the more economical route.

Critical Tolerances and Inspection

Identify the dimensions that affect fit or function, such as hole position, flatness, shaft diameter or sealing surfaces. Avoid applying tight tolerances to every dimension unless necessary. Also specify any inspection report, CMM report or sample approval requirement.

Surface Finish Assembly and Packaging

Specify plating, passivation, anodizing, powder coating, polishing or painting requirements, including color and cosmetic areas where relevant. For welded assemblies, show weld locations and any grinding expectations. If the parts can scratch or deform, include the required protective packaging.

Quick RFQ Checklist

  • 3D model if available
  • Material grade and thickness
  • Prototype and production quantities
  • Critical tolerances and inspection documents
  • Surface finish assembly and packaging requirements
  • Delivery destination and requested date
